Sherman Hemsley, known for his iconic role as actor George Jefferson in The Jeffersons and All in the Family, died at the age of 74.
Hemsley died at his home, in El Paso, Texas, Tuesday, July 24, 2012, local time. Police have not determined the cause of death. Hemsley has no wife or children.
Introduced every week in a spiritual song Movin On Up at the Norman Lear, making the characters larger Hemsley until later gave birth to a brand of comedy.
Hemsley played a role for the first time in the All in the Family. In addition to his role as George Jefferson, Hemsley is also widely known for his role as Deacon Ernest Frye in the NBC series Amen, who played in 1986-1991.
Born in South Philadelphia, Hemsley quit school at upper secondary school. He then entered the Air Force. Then he returned to Philadelphia and worked in the U.S. While working at the postal service, he took acting classes at night.
After performing with local groups in Philadelphia, Hemsley moved to New York to make his debut on Broadway, by acting as Gitlow in Purlie.
When busy touring with the production, writer and television producer Lear, contact Hemsley to portray Jefferson in All in the Family. Hemsley had hesitated to accept the offer, but eventually he joined two years later.
Less than two years after its debut on television, he and his costar in All in The Family, Isabel Sanford, gets his own show in The Jafferson. This series is received by the public, even Hemsley won Emmy and Golden Globe nominations in 1984 and 1985.
Sanford has died first. Hemsley playing partner, died in 2004 at the age of 86.
Are not widely known, Hemsley also a singer. He never released a single Is not That a Kick in the Head at Sutra Records in 1989. Then in 1992, he released Dance, an album of R & B.
Even then he was no longer acting in television, Hemsley and Sanford had played together as George and Louise 'Weezy' Jefferson in the 1990s. The duo also appeared as a model advertising The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Old Navy, Gap, and Denny.
