Symptoms of Food Poisoning

Food poisoning often occurs when a person consumes food that contains toxins such as bacteria, viruses or parasites. What are the signs that occur in the body due to food poisoning?

When the cases tend to be mild to moderate in general can resolve themselves without the need for medical treatment, while if severe, can be life threatening may have to get medical help.

Some of the signs that appear when someone has food poisoning, as quoted from the LIVESTRONG, Sunday (01/30/2011), namely:

Stomach cramps
Scientists from the University of Maryland Medical Center says cramps usually occur immediately after eating the food, or within 12-72 hours. This condition is one of the body's rejection of efforts to toxic substances. Abdominal cramps usually disappear within 4-7 days, but if severe stomach cramps should seek immediate medical assistance.

Vomiting and diarrhea
Vomiting and diarrhea are common effects of food poisoning which is the body's attempt to rid itself of toxins ingested. Abdominal cramps that arise can trigger vomiting and diarrhea becomes severe. If vomiting and diarrhea can lead to ongoing loss of essential nutrients. This condition can be prevented by washing hands and maintaining personal hygiene and food.

Dehydration
Dehydration is loss of body fluids, electrolytes and minerals are also potentially serious health effects. This condition is generally exacerbated by the vomiting and diarrhea.

Mayo Clinic says babies and elderly people with chronic illnesses or diseases that weaken the immune system is more likely to suffer severe dehydration.

For severe dehydration usually require a direct replacement of intravenous fluids. To prevent dehydration should still drink plenty of water or drinks that contain electrolytes.

The food is best eaten when food poisoning is bananas, rice, apples and toast, after two days or more may be eating potatoes, cooked carrots, biscuits and fruit and vegetables.

As for the liquid to drink water, sports drinks, herbal teas and fruit juices (other than pear juice and apple juice because it can lead to diarrhea).

In addition there are some foods and drinks that should be avoided are fatty foods, fiber-rich foods, too much sugar, spicy, caffeine drinks and sodas.
